Joining Groups

How do I join a group?

We currently have about 130 groups, covering more than 70 different interest areas.   Have a look through Groups | Farnham u3a.

  • If you’re interested in joining a group, email the Group Leader or Group Contact to find out if there are spaces.
  • Bear in mind some groups may be over-subscribed, but they will often run a waiting list. See our guidelines on Allocating Spaces in Groups, and also have a look at the latest information on Groups With Spaces.
  • In the meantime, why not try one of the larger groups (which are often less likely to be over-subscribed) or come along to events such as Quizzes, or Cuppa and a Chat?

How do Groups work?

Our groups are organised by the members, for the members. Group Leaders / Group Contacts and the Committee are volunteers who give up their time for free.   If you join a group, please offer to help out with whatever needs doing.  This might include things like taking the register, welcoming new joiners, helping to plan sessions, or setting up a projector.    If you’re interested in becoming a Group Leader, have idea for new groups or would like to help organise things across all our groups, please get in touch with the Groups Team at groups@farnhamu3a.org.uk !

Are there things I might need to pay for?

  • Some groups may collect a small contribution from members to cover the cost of printing handouts or for consumables.
  • Some groups (such as Pilates, Yoga and Tai Chi) engage external tutors from outside u3a. Those members pay the tutor directly for classes, usually in advance for the term or half-term.
  • Groups organising trips and days out will collect money directly for tickets and transport etc. Please note the policy on cancellations and refunds for trips on the Policy & Procedures page of the website.

Membership and inclusion

  • You need to be a current member of Farnham u3a to join a group but you may be able to attend one trial session before joining. We welcome new members throughout the year. Depending on when you join, a discounted subscription may apply, and members of other u3as can join as associates. See Membership | Farnham u3a.
  • We want u3a to be as accessible as possible for all. Our Carers Policy and our Membership Engagement & Accessibility Co-ordinator (membereng@farnhamu3a.org.uk) can help with questions about accessibility and support.
  • We do expect members to treat each other, Group Leaders and Contacts, and others you may come into contact with, such as the staff at the Maltings, with respect and kindness. This is part of the Terms and Conditions of Membership.
